Orthodontics
Whether you are starting orthodontic treatment, wearing braces or aligners right now, or just trying to figure out if it is the right next step, these are the questions we hear most often. If you have one we have not answered, call us at 904-992-8900 and we will talk it through.
Day-to-day care during active treatment, including brushing, flossing, what to eat, and fluoride.
Be sure to brush your teeth right after every meal and before you go to bed. It is best to use a fluoride toothpaste to help fight cavities. Your orthodontist may prescribe a fluoride mouth rinse to help prevent cavities.
Try to brush like this:
Because your toothbrush will not reach between your teeth, brushing alone will not keep your teeth clean and healthy. Flossing can help. A floss threader, available from us or a pharmacy, helps you floss with braces on. Floss once a day, like this:
While you are wearing braces, you can eat almost all of your favorite foods. Please stay away from these troublemakers:
Use a fluoridated toothpaste. Your orthodontist may prescribe a fluoride rinse if necessary.
Daily fluoride is one of the most effective things you can do to prevent decalcification, or white spots, around brackets. It is the most common avoidable problem during treatment.
Discomfort, treatment length, and the patient's role in keeping things on track.
There may be a little discomfort after adjustments, but Tylenol or Advil can usually remedy any discomfort.
We let our patients know their estimated completion date. We also let our patients know that if they miss or reschedule appointments, do not wear their elastics, and do not cooperate, it will take longer.
Treatment is 18 to 30 months, depending on the difficulty of the case and the amount of treatment needed.
Routine visits, special-purpose appliances, and what happens after the brackets come off.
Yes, you will need to continue to see your dentist for regular checkups.
Because we offer both orthodontic care and routine cleanings under the same roof, you can keep all of your visits coordinated through one front desk.
A bite plate helps to correct a deep bite, and it keeps you from biting into your lower braces.
Orthodontics is not only for pretty teeth. A good, healthy bite helps eliminate other health problems in later years. It also helps save teeth from wearing.
Yes, every braces patient gets a retainer. Once active treatment is finished and the brackets come off, your teeth will continue trying to drift if nothing holds them in place. The retainer holds the result.
We will fit your retainer at the appointment where your braces come off and walk you through how to wear it, typically full-time at first and then transitioning to nights only. Lost or damaged retainers are easy to replace, so call the office and we will fit a new one.
Pricing approach, insurance, and Cherry Financing.
Every mouth is different. There is no standard fee. The doctor needs to do an exam to evaluate orthodontic needs on an individual basis.
Yes. There are several payment options. We work with most major dental insurance plans, including Delta Dental, and when your insurance coverage falls short, we partner with Cherry Financing so you can access up to $25,000 with no impact on your credit score and repay at a pace that suits you.
